Why music is such an emotional experience.
I think it’s safe to say that if you are reading this you are someone who really loves music.
And we’ve found each other because of how music makes us feel.
Many of our favourite memories relate to musical experiences, and hearing just the opening bars of a song can transport us right back to a specific time and place in the past.
And that nostalgia can almost feel like a physical pain too.
The music we have gathered and curated throughout our lives defines us; it speaks of who we are as an individual.
It’s very personal too. One person’s Duran Duran is another person’s Durutti Column.
And who are we to judge anybody else’s musical journey?
There are stories and reasons behind the music everyone loves, sometimes it’s nurture and not nature.
If your beloved nana played you nothing but Neil Diamond as a kid, then the opening chords of Love On The Rocks are going to melt your heart and give you goosebumps forevermore. Whether you like it or not.
Equally, hearing the opening shout of the word ‘Hallelujah’ by The Happy Mondays might transport you back to the heady club nights of the late 80s, and immediately a cascade of other memories tumble into you, and a smile forms on your face just thinking about them.
Music is magic.
We can wallow in it, for better or worse. It comforts us during our trials and tribulations; motivates us towards our triumphs; and otherwise it entertains us, like nothing else can.
What else on Earth can move us so deeply within a matter of seconds?
A film can take two hours to build to the emotional climax.
A TV series might take half an hour at best, but often keeps you hanging on from episode to episode.
Music is instant.
You hear the chord change in a song you’ve never heard before and you know immediately you need to know what the song is, and that it’s going to be a part of your life forever.
You can’t explain that, it’s just feel.
It’s become almost cliched to hear people describe the life-changing power of seeing early punk bands, and how their lives were never the same again.
Possibly a million bands have since spawned from that raw, unfettered energy.
It spoke to people about the disillusionment of their lives at that time in ways that nothing else had the vocabulary to do so.
And, perhaps that’s exactly it - the ethereal, ineffable magic about music; it speaks to us, for us, and about us.
When it comes down to it, that’s essentially why we built The Buzz Mcr. We wanted to create a Radio Station that did just that.
A Radio Station that didn’t just play music, it made you feel something.
It spoke to you, and didn’t just speak at you.
